Job Summary/Basic Function

In keeping with our mission and vision statement, Maryville actively seeks adjunct faculty members who are experts in their fields and have a passion for teaching and building online courses. Adjunct faculty are an integral part of the University’s learning community and teach courses online and/or on campus.

The College of Arts and Sciences is accepting applications for an academically qualified adjunct faculty member to develop an online version of:

SUST 210: Earth Systems
Course Description: This course uses an interdisciplinary approach to describe how the Earth operates as an interconnected, integrated system. Students will learn about the major components of the four spheres (atmosphere, hydrosphere, lithosphere, and biosphere) and how each sphere connects with and influences the others. Economic and sociopolitical influences on the Earth's systems will be discussed throughout.

Course Learning Outcomes:
1. Describe the composition and structure of the four spheres (hydrosphere, atmosphere, biosphere, and lithosphere).
2. Explain how geographical and geological processes have shaped the biosphere throughout time.
3. Describe plate tectonics and their impacts on the four spheres.
4. Identify the hydrological processes that occur within the other spheres.
5. Discuss the fundamental factors that impact weather and climate.
6. Describe biogeochemical cycles, particularly anthropogenic changes to these cycles.
7. Identify the influence of economics and other human values on natural resource management.

Essential Job Functions/Responsibilities:
• Develop SUST 210 as an online course partnering with the Learning Design Team and the College of Arts and Sciences
• After successful completion of course development, each assigned course as specified in the schedule and course contract.
• Participate in welcome orientation to become familiar with the University’s mission, academic policies and procedures, expectations, and Canvas (Learning Management System).
• Prepare essential learning objectives, lesson plans, and assignments. Develop course syllabus.
• Clearly communicate course objectives and learning outcomes, teaching methodology, and assignments and deadlines.
• Employ a variety of teaching styles in order to effectively deliver course content demonstrating both academic and real-world applications of concepts covered.
• Encourage active learning through discussion topics, class assignments, group projects, etc.
• Provide feedback and grade assignments in a timely and thorough manner (with 24-36 hrs.).
• Establish office hours to provide additional assistance with student questions/concerns.
• Report early alerts for students who are not actively engaging in the course.
• Additional duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

• Masters in Environmental Science, Geology, Biogeochemistry, or a related field

Preferred Qualifications

• PhD in Environmental Science, Geology, Biogeochemistry, or a related field
• Online teaching experience and/or online course development
