Job Summary/Basic Function

 

The Residential Life Graduate Assistant (GA) is a para-professional living-in position reporting to the Director of Residential Life. The Residential Life GA participates as a member of the Residential Life staff, creates opportunities for student development through excellent programming and individual student interactions, and demonstrates a strong student focus with evening and weekend commitments. This position is responsible for the organization and leadership of student development activities, supervision of RA and desk staff, adjudicating conduct, and management of administrative operations of assigned residential areas.

Essential Duties:

  • Advising and Supervising
  • Co-supervises Resident Assistants within assigned area
  • Supports student programming efforts and assists with program advisement, implementation, and coverage
  • Program Development, Implementation, and Assessment
  • Develops and coordinates programs and promotions for Residential Life
  • Supports student programming of all of Student Life
  • Assist with the content management of ResLife Cinema (SWANK)
  • Manages the daily operations of a residence hall, including student conduct for that specific area
  • Assist with selecting, training, supervising, mentoring, and evaluating Resident Assistants
  • Participate in on-call responsibilities, crisis intervention, and conflict resolution
  • Assist in contacting/requesting emergency transportation of residential students to healthcare facilities
  • Responsible for enforcing University policies and procedures
  • Coordinate, in conjunction with your supervisor, room changes and placement
  • Articulate student interests/needs and facilitate the development of a healthy living environment
  • Oversee development, implementation, and assessment of community programming
  • Assist with campus-wide programs through collaboration with Student Engagement
  • Maintain communications and interactions with residence hall students, staff, and faculty
  • Contributes to the achievement of enrollment goals by designing programs that contribute to the recruitment and retention of students and by assisting other departments with enrollment-related initiatives
  • Attends Student Life meetings, trainings, retreats, and planning sessions as deemed necessary
  • Maintains a high profile at student programs and athletic events
  • Partners with other Student Life staff as indicated and seeks out opportunities to work with other
  • Performs other duties as assigned

 

Learning Outcomes:

  1. Resource management through resourcefulness and creativity, planning and managing a budget, development of plans for programming.
  2. Supervision through participation in selection and training processes, organizing tasks and responsibilities for RA staff, maintaining regular contact with supervisees, completion of written evaluation of individual staff members.
  3. Communication skills through practice on site in areas such as presentations skills, writing skills, mediation, RA staff meetings and group facilitation.
  4. Decision making by being able to identify issues and problems, bring problems to resolution, manage crisis situations, and reach conclusions and make recommendations about issues.
  5. Technology by showing a basic understanding of personal computing and awareness of technologies used in residential life

Compensation:

  1. Stipend for the academic year: $6000
  2. Tuition award for the academic year: 12 credits/ up to $9,900 (based on the program of the selected GA) MBA, COMM ($774 per credit hour), DSCI, ASCI ($825 per credit hour)
  3. Additional Awards: Meal Plan C. Shared 2 BR Apartment

The award is based on 20 hours per week for 15 weeks each semester.  It is expected that students earn their credit hours in the fall and spring semesters by being enrolled in a minimum of 6 credit hours each semester.  Credits must be earned by May 31 each year.  Tuition waiver does not cover fees, private music lessons, books, or OneCard charges.  Students will receive ½ of their annual stipend during the Fall semester and ½ of their annual stipend during the Spring semester.  Each semester, the stipend will be divided into 8 payments.  Fall stipends are paid on or about September 15-December 31.  Spring stipends are paid on or about January 31-May 15

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelors Degree
  • Acceptance into one of the following graduate programs at Maryville University:
    • Actuarial Science, Musical Therapy, Physical Therapy, Speech-Language Pathology, Education, MBA
  • Strong commitment to ethnic and cultural diversity
  • Exemplary skills in program development and implementation
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • High level of competency in the use of technology to accomplish the above goals
  • Work some evenings and weekends
