Job Summary/Basic Function

 

The Graduate Assistant (GA) will provide assistance with the tutoring program coordinated by Student Success. Programming responsibilities may include Study Strategies Week and other events and programs coordinated by Student Success. The duties of the GA do not include tutoring, however, they are essential in aiding peer tutors develop skills that will help them grasp course materials and learning strategies. The GA will be integral in helping Student Success provide individualized tutoring and mentoring support to on-campus and online students. The GA will assist Academic Success and Life Coaching in developing and updating online appointment scheduling software documents, forms, and website covering all aspects of tutoring support services and academic success programs. GA will be supervised by the Coordinating Life Coach for Peer Tutoring.

Number of hours per week (not to exceed 20, except during August and January): The Graduate Assistant is expected to work an average of 20 hours per week from August until the beginning of May for a total of 675 hours. The Graduate Assistant may be needed for more than 20 hours per week during the peer tutoring planning and training week in August and January. Some evening and weekend hours may be required. Regular office hours will be scheduled based on the GA’s availability.

Specific responsibilities:


The Graduate Assistant (GA) will assist Student Success with management of the peer tutors. The Graduate Assistant will perform the following functions:
• Directly supervise lead tutor liaisons and co-supervise peer tutors
• Assist in approving tutoring timesheet submissions through ADP
• Communicate regularly with tutors through GroupMe, text, email, Canvas, etc.
• Plan and lead professional development sessions and orientation sessions for tutoring staff
• Observe tutoring appointments and providing constructive feedback
• Manage tutoring requests through online scheduling software
• Organize data, run reports on usage of tutoring services, access need, and make recommendations for future growth and tutoring support
• Coordinate the tutor request form to help find tutors for various disciplines
• Develop digital signage, social media content, and promotion materials for on-campus and online tutoring
• Establish faculty partnerships and organize classroom shadowing for peer tutors
• Plan and facilitate presentations and success workshops in classrooms
• Work closely with Director of Academic Success and Life Coach Tutoring Coordinator on assigned projects
• Assist with peer mentoring program for academically at-risk students
• Provide front desk coverage for the Division of Student Success
• Provide testing support and assist with intake paperwork for first time counseling appointments
• Must be willing to work some weekend or evening hours

Learning Outcomes:

  1. Educators who will provide effective teaching methods to meet the needs of the learner for a variety of audiences.
  2. The GA will co-create 2 pieces of training (fall and spring) for all tutors.  This will include orienting tutors to the software, and one on one training for ALL new tutor hires.
  3. Learners who will seek and expand knowledge for professional growth and development to help others.
  4. The GA will identify at least 1 area of personal interest to explore enhancing academic support processes and/or programs.  
  5. Administrators who will manage the resources necessary for providing physical therapy services.
  6. The GA will be expected to learn and master new systems and procedures to provide exceptional support to students (Salesforce, Excel, and other reporting tools.

Compensation:

  1. Stipend for the academic year: $3000
  2. Tuition award for the academic year:  6 credits/ up to a maximum of $4932 (dependent upon the program of the student).
  3. Approved Academic Programs:
    1. COMM, MBA, MED ($774 per credit hour)
    2. SPLP, DPT, Ed.D ($922 per credit hour)

The award is based on 20 hours per week for 15 weeks each semester. It is expected that students earn their credit hours in the fall and spring semesters by being enrolled in a minimum of 6 credit hours each semester. Credits must be earned by May 31 each year. Tuition waiver does not cover fees, private music lessons, books, or OneCard charges. Students will receive ½ of their annual stipend during the Fall semester and ½ of their annual stipend during the Spring semester. Each semester, the stipend will be divided into 8 payments. Fall stipends are paid on or about September 15-December 31. Spring stipends are paid on or about January 31-May 15

Minimum Qualifications

• Bachelor's Degree

• Must be a full-time degree-seeking student in one of the following graduate degree program at Maryville University: COMM, MBA, MED, SPLP, DPT, Ed.D
• Excellent writing, organizational and interpersonal skills; ability to work independently as well as in a team; ability to work on several projects simultaneously, balance priorities, and meet deadlines; ability to maintain confidentiality; comfortable with technology, text, and email communication; strong problem solving abilities; demonstrate ability to provide excellent customer service; ability to work successfully with a variety of individuals from various socioeconomic, ethnic and cultural backgrounds.

Preferred Qualifications

• Two years of experience as a peer tutor in the Center for Academic Success and Life Coaching
• Graduate students from all programs will be considered but those students demonstrating an interest in higher education/student affairs are preferred
